THE FORBES FIELD CHAPTER PICKS THE 2003 RACES IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

During our recent Spring meeting, we once again held our annual Predict-the-Standings competition.  The winner of this, to be announced at our Fall meeting, will receive the admiration of his peers, and probably a valuable prize, once I figure out what that might be.

Highlights:

- The consensus opinion has the Pirates finishing third, just behind the Cubs.

-  We predict very close races in both Central divisions.

-  The Expos received votes for all five spots in the NL East.

-  The Phillies came the closest to being a unanimous choice to win.

-  Similarly, we are almost unanimous in foreseeing a long summer in Detroit.

-  Not a one of us predicted that last year's champion, the Angels, would win their division.  (None of us picked them to make the playoffs last year, either.)
