The Roll of Honor was the brainchild of Bill Ranier. After reading the Bill James book "Whatever Happened to the Hall of Fame", Bill thought about a more appropriate way to honor the greats of the game he loved. He contacted a few of us and it the Roll of Honor was born.

We chose Super Bowl Sunday for two reasons. The first was because it was a great way to get some good baseball talk going in the off season and second and most important it is the date of the annual Finoli super bowl bash and one of the few times we're all together.

We're now four classes into the Roll of Honor and you can see those classes by selecting the appropriate link on the list right above. Some things that have been spawned by the debate have been included in THE ROLL OF HONOR RESEARCH PAGES. Ranier and I, both SABR members and very into the various reports put out by the organization, had a fruitless discussion over the managerial candidate in the second class debate and decided to put together a report on managers to find out who the worthy ones truly were. The results were very interesting and put Joe McCarthy over the hump in the third selection. This Year the study helped us elect Billy Martin. Since then reports on the Negro Leagues, the 19th century stars and Cy Young winners of the early 20th century, which convinced us to put in Bob Feller, have been put together. Our newest report is on the forgotten hero's of World War II The results of these reports can be found on our RESEARCH PAGES.

"THE CREEDO"

A GROUP OF ASTUTE PITTSBURGH BASED BASEBALL FANS, TIRED OF THE INEQUITIES IN THE SELECTION OF PLAYERS TO THE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME, DECIDED TO FORM AN ALTERNATIVE IN WHICH TO HONOR THE GREATEST FIGURES OF THE GAME.

EACH MEMBER WAS ASKED TO DRAW UP A LIST OF 20 NOMINEES OF THE GREATEST 20TH CENTURY BASEBALL PLAYERS, REGARDLESS OF POSITION. ADDITIONALLY EACH MEMBER SUBMITTED A LIST OF TWO NEGRO LEAGUE, PLAYERS WHO PLAYED PRIMARILY IN THE 1800'S, MANAGERS AND EXECUTIVES.

THE VOTES ARE THEN TAKEN, THE MERITS OF THOSE WHO RECEIVED 75% ARE THEN DEBATED. AFTER THAT, IN CASE OF TIES AT A POSITION OR CATEGORY, A FINAL VOTE IS TAKEN AND THE CANDIDATES ARE THEN ENSHRINED IN THE ROLL OF HONOR.
