THE RECAP.

HALL OF FAME GRAVESITES.

Long-time members will recall a few gravesite tours we did during past meetings. As you may know, four members of the Baseball Hall of Fame rest in the Pittsburgh area. If you have a GPS receiver, here are the exact locations of our four guys:

  • Josh Gibson: Allegheny, between Lawrenceville and Friendship. N 40 28' 28.4" W 79 56' 46.1"

  • Pie Traynor: Homewood, in Point Breeze. N 40 26' 40.2" W 79 54' 40.6"

  • Pud Galvin (family plot): Calvary, between Hazelwood and Greenfield. N 40 24' 57.4" W 79 55' 56.0"

  • Honus Wagner: Jefferson Memorial, South Hills, off Curry Hollow Rd. N 40 19' 59.8" W 79 58' 54.5"

WELCOME ABOARD. NEW PITTSBURGH AREA MEMBERS OF SABR:

The following is a list of the new Pittsburgh Area members of SABR.

  • Dino Guarino of Pittsburgh.

  • Douglas Wilson of Pittsburgh.

  • Kenneth Gray of Pittsburgh.

  • Eugene Siren of Pittsburgh.

  • John Kopera of Hastings.

INFORMATION NEEDED:

  • Mark Vatavuk (vat69er@hotmail.com) is researching pro baseball in Erie. He wonders if anyone has any information on games between the Pirates and teams from Erie. He's aware of a game played in 1906. Does anyone know anything about any other games, like maybe in the 20s or 30s? Any info will be appreciated.

  • Gene Carney (carneya6@borg.com) is looking into the 1919 World Series fix. "In the 1920 grand jury hearings, one of the players testifying (Rube Benton, I believe) mentioned a Pittsburgh gambling syndicate that was in on it -- but I've seen nothing elsewhere on that. Have you?" Also, Edd Roush felt that the Reds were the better team. He later recalled Cicotte, when he finally "spilled the beans" to the grand jury, saying "We were out there trying to win after that first ball game" -- but the writers, Roush says, had all picked the Sox, and they latched onto the Fix theory (my phrase, not Edd's) to give themselves an alibi, so they didn't report what Cicotte said. Roush was playing for the Reds in Sept 1920, and according to Retrosheet, the Reds played 2 games at home on September 28, then nothing till another doubleheader Oct 2 in Pittsburgh. Can anyone can verify that Cicotte's statements appeared in the Pittsburgh papers -- where Roush might have seen them?
