THE 2008 SPRING MEETING

The snow is melting, the Pirates are preparing for a new season and baseball is in the air so it must be time for the semi-annual Forbes Field Chapter meeting!

A lot’s been happening since we last met in November. We’ve had two Hot Stove gatherings; formed a group outing to see the Pirates play the Yankees this June and aided in several research requests. And now it’s time:

Want to know the hidden cause of the Pirates’ 15 year losing streak? Come hear Fred Shugars explain. Want to hear about the 1950 home run Ralph Kiner hit in Forbes Field that may be even further than Mantle’s Washington shot? Come listen to eyewitness Tom Hennen and Joe Norden describe it and their research about it. And, as always, test your wits against Jim Haller’s confounding trivia quiz and put your final standings predictions in to Larry Pansino.

Date: Saturday, April 26, 2008

Time: 9:00am – 3:30pm

Place: Senator John Heinz History Center

We still have openings so polish up that research you’ve been doing over the winter and get your request for time as well as your RSVPs regarding attendance in to Joe Elinich at the address shown below. And by the way, the Phillies are in town that night so you might just want to have dinner and take in the game to see if Ryan Howard can hit one into the Allegheny as he did in the Home Run Derby that preceded the ’06 All Star Game.

THE SPRING 2007 FORBES FIELD CHAPTER MEETING RECAP

The Forbes Field SABR Chapter spring meeting took place Saturday April 14th, and as always had many wonderful speakers and events. Here is a recap of what happened.

Mindy Ellis, current sculptor of player images on Hall of Fame induction plaques, described her artistic process and the production of the plaques by Matthews International Corp. of Pittsburgh.

John Perrotto, knowledgeable Pirates beat writer for the Beaver County Times and contributor to Baseball Prospectus, answered many questions about the team and its prospects.

Sam Reich, author of the new book Waiting for Cooperstown, discussed so-far-unsuccessful Hall of Fame candidates who have been considered by the Hall’s veterans committee, and his own leading contenders who played between 1901 and ’72.

Steve Tahsler, general manager of the Slippery Rock (Pa.) Sliders, previewed the team’s inaugural season this year in the independent Frontier League.

Tom Baxter described the proliferation of DVDs of many complete games (both post-season and regular season), highlight film sets, baseball documentaries and movies.

Trivia winner: Harry Funk.

Next meeting set for Saturday 10/13/07 for a morning meeting at the History Center followed by an afternoon gathering "at the wall" for the annual playing of game 7 of the 1960 World Series.
